Variability of marine biological productivity in the northeastern Pacific over the past millennium

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In this study we present new data of biogenic opal (BO), organic carbon (OC), and calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) in a highresolution record from the western coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico. The variability of marine biological productivity in this area is dominated by El Niño and La Niña events on different time scales. The BO and OC contents showed a decrease between AD 1100 and 1400. From AD 1400 to the present, BO and OC showed a significant increase, indicating permanent upwelling conditions. T… Show more

“…La variabilidad de la productividad primaria en el Pacífico nororiental se asocia al cambio en las condiciones fisicoquímicas de la columna de agua, que son moduladas interanualmente durante los eventos El Niño y La Niña (Juárez et al 2014). Los sedimentos laminados de esta cuenca indicaron un aumento en la abundancia de especies de dinoflagelados heterotróficos durante los intervalos de tiempo con fase fría de la ODP y de ENOS en el siglo XX (Castañeda-Quezada 2016).…”

“…Variability in primary productivity in the northeastern Pacific Ocean is associated with changes in the physicochemical conditions in the water column, which undergo interannual modulations during El Niño and La Niña events (Juárez et al 2014). Laminated sediments in this basin indicated an increase in the abundance of heterotrophic dinoflagellate species during the cold phases of the PDO and ENSO in the 20th century (Castañeda-Quezada 2016).…”

“…Mann et al, 2009) has been related to the lowest solar irradiance in the past millenium (Spörer, Maunder and Dalton solar minima, Bard et al, 2000; Lean, 2018), and increased volcanic activity (Crowley et al, 2008). Although the LIA has been widely studied, its timing and impact on a global scale are still being discussed, mainly in tropical regions (Juárez et al, 2014) and in the ETNP (Barron and Bukry, 2007; Choumiline et al, 2019; Goni et al, 2006; Juárez et al, 2014; Staines-Urías et al, 2009). In paleolimnological studies in central and southern Mexico, the LIA has been associated with temperature decrease of ~2.0°C and mountain glacier advance (Lozano-García Mdel et al, 2007; Vázquez-Selem, 2011).…”
