Variability of risk factors and diabetes complications

Abstract: Several studies suggest that, together with glucose variability, the variability of other risk factors, as blood pressure, plasma lipids, heart rate, body weight, and serum uric acid, might play a role in the development of diabetes complications. Moreover, the variability of each risk factor, when contemporarily present, may have additive effects. However, the question is whether variability is causal or a marker. Evidence shows that the quality of care and the attainment of the target impact on the variabili… Show more

“…Previous studies measured SUA only once in the general population. Nonetheless, there is a potential association between T2D, CVD and long-term variability of SUA ( 32 ). For this reason, we investigated the relationship between the uric acid variability and CVD in patients with T2D.…”

“…No studies have assessed the correlation between uric acid variability and CVD in patients with T2D ( 32 ). A previous study explored the association between uric acid variability as measured by SD of Z-scores, and coronary heart disease and all-cause mortality in a male population without diabetes ( 51 ).…”

“…the square root of the variance, of the body weight measures available during the three years preceding the longitudinal phase of the study. Standard deviation was chosen since it is the most used metric to assess the variability of risk factors [ 11 ]. A minimum of five measures was considered, in order to have a robust estimate of variability.…”
