Variation in Essential Oil Yield and Composition of CretanVitex agnus castusL. Fruits

Abstract: The hydrodistilled essential oils of mature fruits from five populations of Vitex agnus castus L. growing wild in Crete, Greece, were analyzed by GC and GUMS.More than 70 components were detected, of which 47, comprising 87% of the total oil were identified. The oil yield and quantitative composition differed significantly between populations. The main constituents of all the oils were sabinene (16.6-31.2%), 1,8-cineole (4.4-14.5%), (E)-P-farnesene (4.8-9.9%), a-pinene (0.4-10.2%) and P-caryophyllene (1.4-6.0%… Show more

“…Sabinene was absent from the present analyses, but is reported to be the main component in oils from leaves collected in Italy (Galletti et al 1996), fruit collect in Greece (Sorensen and Katsiotis 1999) et al 1998). In the present study, trans-sabinene hydrate (1.9 ± 0.0%) was found only in the fruit, which was probably an artifact obtained through the oxidation of sabinene caused by the extraction process employed.…”

“…According to Zoghbi et al (Senatore et al 1996), Greece (fruit) (Sarikurkcu et al 2009) and Turkey (fruit) (Sorensen andKatsiotis 1999, Senatore et al 2003). Investigating the essential oil from leaves collected in Italy, Marongiu et al (2010) found bicyclogermacrene (16.2%), followed by β-(E)-farnesene (10.1%).…”

“…The obtained yield from the essential oil of VAC fruits is higher than the fruits yielded and studied in Greece [29] and Serbia [30] which are, respectively, 0.7% and 0.72%. The chemical composition of essential oils from leaves and fruits of Moroccan VAC was compared with other studies.…”

“…According to the results reported recently, the chief components of the leaf essential oil from Iran were α-pinene (14.8%), limonene (10.2%), β-caryophyllene (6.9%), sabinene (5.2%), and β-farnesene (5.9%) [35]. These variations in the composition of the volatile oils from VAC seem to depend on climate, conditions, types, and methods of distillation [29].…”
