Variation in Pollen Size, Fertilization Ability, and Postfertilization Siring Ability in Erythronium grandiflorum

Abstract: The mean volume of pollen grains and total pollen production varied both within and among plants of Erythronium grandiflorum. The second flowers of two-flowered plants tended to produce smaller and fewer grains than first flowers, but there was no overall relationship between mean pollen grain size and production per flower. I evaluated the effects of pollen size differences within and among plants on two components of male reproductive success: pollen tube growth and postfertilization siring ability.Pollen tu… Show more

“…The effect of pollen size on pollen performance (pollen germination, pollen tube growth rate and fertilization ability) is relatively unexplored (hut see Cruzan, 1990). Pollen volume may influence the probability of seed abortion in Eryrhronium (Cruzan, 1990) through the contributions of pollen tube cytoplasm to the endosperm (Russell, 1980); large pollen contribute more than small pollen.…”

However, the importance of pollen size variation in wild radish is not well understood.…”

“…Several studies have documented intraspecific variation among genets in pollen size (Adams, 1982;Stanton and Preston, 1986;McKone and Webb, 1988;Thomson et aI., 1989). But the relationship, if any, between pollen size and postpollination paternal success has not until recently been tested with genetic markers (Cruzan, 1990;Young and Stanton, I990a).…”

“…Differences in paternal success can persist even when outcrossed pollen from more than one donor is applied in equal amounts to the same stigma (e.g., Epperson and Clegg, 1987;Snow and Mazer, 1988;Bertin, 1990;Cruzan, 1990). A variety of mechanisms can explain this variation in postpollination paternal success (Charlesworth et aI., 1987;Lyons et al, 1989).…”
