Variation of anatomical structures related to biventricular pacing procedures and cannulation of the coronary sinus

Abstract: The success of biventricular pacing procedures is at least partially related to the ability to implant leads into the heart. Lead placement into the coronary sinus can be particularly challenging because of variations in the coronary venous anatomy. We examined the anatomy of the coronary sinus and the Thebesian valve. Forty-three (22 male, 21 female) embalmed adult cadavers were used to determine the internal diameter of the coronary sinus ostium, the presence of a membranous or fenestrated Thebesian valve, a… Show more

“…In horses and other domesticated mammals, the Thebesian valve is described to be rudimental 15 . In this study, the Thebesian valve was present in 9 of 21 specimens, which is a lower prevalence than seen in humans 4,30,33,34,37 . We focused on the Thebesian valve presence rather than morphology, however, different Thebesian valve sizes were noticed during the dissections.…”

Adequate imaging techniques will be required to visualise a problematic Thebesian valve in horses in order to perform coronary sinus cannulation efficiently.…”
