Marine plastic debris has become a major concern on the northern coast of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, where it poses a threat to marine resources. A preliminary study was conducted to investigate the abundance and characteristics of marine plastic debris at four major fish landing sites in the northern coast of Jaffna, using the Clean Coast Index (CCI) and Plastic Abundance Index (PAI). The results revealed that the average abundance of marine debris and plastic debris were 1.71 ± 0.42 items/m2 and 1.66 ± 0.57 items/m2, respectively. The most common types of plastic debris were plastic rope and net pieces (23.2%), followed by unidentified weathered plastic fragments (16.7%), beverage bottles (16.2%), bottle caps and lids (13%), and styrofoam (14.1%). The recognized sources of plastic debris were mainly fishing-based activities, recreation activities, transboundary sources, and unidentified sources. The cleanliness level of the fish landing sites were categorized as extremely dirty, with high levels of plastic debris, resulting in a CCI above 10 and a PAI value over 8. This study realized the consequence of implementation of a proper plastic waste management framework in the northern coast of Jaffna and highlights the necessity to address buoyant debris on the northern Indian Ocean.

Impacts of the Thondaimanaru Barrage Construction on socio – economic status of fishing communities in Thondaimanaru Lagoon, Jaffna, Sri Lanka

Present study was conducted to determine the impacts of barrage construction on livelihood status of fishers who involve fishing in Thondaimanaru lagoon. The data related to the socio -economic condition of fishers in the particular area were obtained through a pre -tested structured questionnaire and in -depth guided interviews from July 2016 to January 2017. Randomly selected 25 fishermen were interviewed. The collected data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. Survey results indicated that 88% of fishermen are living as nuclear families consisting of 4 -5 members. Majority of fishermen are Hindus and 92% are married. About 64% engaged in fishing are under age group of 36 -55. Education is still not prominent among the fishers. Only 84% has primary education. The main occupation in this society is fishing and earned highest monthly income LKR (6000 ± 1000). It was found that installation of barrage plays a crucial role in socio -economic status of fishers of Thondaimanaru lagoon. This barrage severely affected the traditional fishing, amount of fish production and its consequences on their income as well. It was apparent from the current study that these fishermen have poor livelihood status and they need support from government or other organizations to enhance their socioeconomic status.

Sri Lanka is an island with extending coastal shores and extra valuable resources. Anthropogenic pressures and climate change have made the coastal environment increasingly susceptible. As coastal waters are dynamic and unstable, monitoring water quality parameters is essential. Monitoring of water quality measures of coastal waters plays a vital role in identifying the pollution sources and understanding the variations in water quality. It is helpful for stakeholders in making policies and standards to ensure the current status of the aquatic environment and life in it. A long-term assessment of physical and chemical properties was conducted every month for 18 months, from August 2020 to January 2022, at the coastal shores of Mathagal, Point Pedro, and Charty Beach to understand the current status and Spatio-temporal variations of water quality parameters in the studied locations. The parameters such as air and water temperature, pH, salinity, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and Electric Conductivity (EC) were measured on-site using the smarTROLL multiparameter handheld equipment. For statistical analysis, Minitab 2019 statistical software was used. Sampling locations significantly affected the spatial variation of DO but not the other studied parameters. The sampling months significantly affected the temporal variation of all assessed water quality parameters. The overall mean values of air and water temperature, pH, salinity, DO, TDS and EC were 29.90±1.43°C, 31.61±1.60°C, 8.11±0.13, 32.57±2.90 ppt, 6.85±0.86 mg/dl, 31.84±2.66 ppt and 52969.6±5355.96 μS/cm respectively. From the current study, it can be pointed out that the water quality parameters are influenced by precipitation and seasonal trends.
