Variations of the cognitive interview: Which one is the most effective in enhancing children's testimonies?

Abstract: Two experiments were conducted to examine the effectiveness of the combination of instructions used in the Cognitive Interview (CI) and the effectiveness of a new mnemonic, the 'cued recall' (CR), on children's recall and suggestibility levels. In the first experiment, 229 children, ages 4-5 and 8-9, participated in a painting session. They were then interviewed with one of six interview protocols: A full CI, four of its variations, or a Structured Interview (SI). The children were then asked some misleading q… Show more

“…However, to our knowledge, no study to date has been designed to assess their effects when used within the same free recall phase and with no questions asked between the various free recall attempts. Thus, to address this issue and to refine the conclusions concerning the effectiveness of the retrieval techniques used with the CI/ECI and notably the 'order' and the 'perspective', we propose to evaluate them by using a methodology already implemented with children (Holliday & Albon, 2004;Verkampt & Ginet, 2009). This method consists of comparing several combinations of the four CI/ECI mnemonics during multiple free recall attempts, omitting one or more of them.…”

“…Therefore, the ECI has been widely acknowledged as one of the most successful procedures for enhancing witness recollection (Paulo et al, ). The ECI has been found to be effective in different countries—for example, USA, UK, Australia and Brazil (Stein & Memon, ); with different types of witness—for example, children, adults and elderly (Verkampt & Ginet, ; Wright & Holliday, ); with different intervals between the crime and the interview—minutes to weeks (Larsson, Granhag, & Spjut, ); with different type of event—for example, crime, traffic accident and phone call (Campos & Alonso‐Quecuty, ) both in aboratory (Colomb & Ginet, ) and field studies (Colomb, Ginet, Wright, Demarchi, & Sadler, ) and is now being widely used by police forces in a variety of locations (e.g., UK and Australia).…”

“…Particularmente interessante para o presente artigo é o fato de existirem vários estudos que sugerem que esta entrevista é peculiarmente efi caz com crianças das mais diversas faixas etárias (Gentle et al, 2013;Holliday & Albon, 2004;Verkampt & Ginet, 2010). Adicionalmente, este modelo de entrevista focaliza um conjunto de aspectos que, tal como abordado ao longo do artigo, são essenciais quando se entrevista crianças e adolescentes no contexto policial e forense.…”
