Vark preferred learning styles and online education

Abstract: It has become evident that students have diverse preferred learning styles and effective instructors must design and deliver courses to meet the needs of those students. This study investigates the four physiological learning styles of visual, aural, read‐write and kinesthetic as they apply to online education. Findings suggest that online students are more likely to have stronger visual and read‐write learning styles. Further, read‐write learners and students that were strong across all four learning styles w… Show more

“…The instructor in e-learning courses should facilitate, stimulate, guide, and challenge his/ her students via empowering them with freedom and responsibility. Instructor feedback to students can improve learner affective responses, increase cognitive skills and knowledge, and activate meta-cognition, which refers to the awareness and control of cognition through planning, monitoring, and regulating cognitive activities [12].…”

“…They include human factors and design factors. Human factors include personality Characteristics [9,10], learning styles [11][12][13][14], and instructor's attributes [15]). Design factors include a wide range of constructs that affect effectiveness of e-learning systems such as technology [5,[16][17][18], learner control, learning model [19,20], course contents and structure [21][22][23], and interaction [23][24][25][26].…”

“…Thus the narrated video clips permitted students to use both sensory channels at the same time. Following the VARK definition of learning styles (Drago & Wagner, 2004), the narrated video clips suit aural and visual learners; the latter representing the majority of undergraduate physiology students (Dobson, 2009). Further, all students could use the clips as a guide to subsequent interaction with the animations and simulations (Table 3), a process that may be preferred by kinesthetic learners.…”

“…Their achievements would depend on their ability to adapt lessons based on their individual aspects, and teacher created environment to fulfil their needs. 2 There are many models that describe learning styles or learning preferences. 3 Even though each model might have their own drawbacks, knowing about learning preferences could help academicians to know more about their students and also can give positive feedback about their learning and approach towards curricula.…”
