Vascular characteristics in young women—Effect of extensive endurance training or a sedentary lifestyle

Abstract: Elastic artery distensibility and carotid artery IMT are not different in young women with extensive endurance training over several years and in those with sedentary lifestyle. On the other hand, our data suggest that long-term endurance training is associated with potentially favourable peripheral artery adaptation, especially in sports where upper body work is added. This adaptation, if persisting later in life, could contribute to lower cardiovascular risk.

“…Other possible explanations for unaltered IMT could be that 3 months of exercise intervention is too short a duration to induce changes of IMT in women, or alternatively, women's arteries respond differently to exercise training. We have previously demonstrated that young female endurance athletes have similar CCA geometry as age-matched controls [6]. Since CCA blood flow only increases slightly during intense aerobic exercise [35], and far less than in conduit arteries that supply the working muscles, it is conceivable that minor enhancement of the pressure and shear stress stimuli has not enough impact on the carotid and brachial artery to alter the local wall thickness in young women.…”

“…It is still unknown how hypoxia/PHDi use influences the long‐term mitochondrial function or muscle capillarization . Therefore, clinicians will have to take PHDi misuse into account when unexplained high haematocrits are detected as the latter has many unfavourable effects on arterial wall properties and haemostasis …”

“…27 Therefore, clinicians will have to take PHDi misuse into account when unexplained high haematocrits are detected as the latter has many unfavourable effects on arterial wall properties and haemostasis. 28 In conclusion, the new 'wonder drug' PHDis have the potential to replace recombinant Epo in anaemia treatment in a multitude of (pathologic) conditions and thereby improve the individual's quality of life. Nonetheless, misuse of it might come with unforeseen complications and adverse events in healthy individuals striving to optimize their fitness, resilience and overall performance with the help of a pill.…”

“…24 Felnőttekkel kapcsolatos kutatások Szőts és mtsai kutatásukban megerősítették, hogy a táplálkozás mellett a rendszeres testmozgásnak igen fontos szerepe van az egészséges csontrendszer kialakulásában. 25 A rendszeres fizikai aktivitás előnyeire erős bizonyítékot találtak több betegséggel kapcsolatban, melyet több tanulmány részletesen elemzett 26,27 (különböző típusú daganatos megbetegedések, 28,29,30,31,32,33 depreszszió, 34,35,36,37,38 2-es típusú cukorbetegség, 39,40 szívbetegségek 41,42,43,44 ). Számos tanulmány készült a fizikai inaktivitás és különböző krónikus betegségek előfordulásának összefüggéséről, lehetséges kockázatnövelő hatásáról is, amelyeket az 1. táblázatban foglaltunk össze.…”
