Vegetation history, fire history and lake development recorded for 6300 years by pollen, charcoal, loss on ignition and chironomids at a small lake in southern Kyrgyzstan (Alay Range, Central Asia)

Abstract: Analyses of pollen, microscopic charcoal, loss on ignition (LOI) and chironomids in the sediment of the small sub-alpine lake Kichikol (2541 m a.s.l.; 39°59'N, 73°33'E; Alay Range, Kyrgyzstan) provide new data to reconstruct the vegetational and lacustrine history during the past 6300 years. From 6300—5100 calibrated 14C years BP (cal. yr BP) semi-deserts with Chenopodiaceae and Ephedra and rather open Juniperus stands persisted around the lake. At 5100—4000 cal. yr BP dense Juniperus forest established. Arou… Show more

“…Populations in the south harbor higher genetic diversity and are strongly differentiated from northern populations. Together with pollen data obtained in the study region (Beer et al, 2007(Beer et al, , 2008a(Beer et al, , 2008b, this pattern indicates a relatively recent spread of the species from the south to the north during a more humid period. At present, intense exploitation and deforestation in the region have led to the degradation of natural juniper forests.…”

“…To sum up, several authors have had to face problem of inconsistency of dates with other proxies and even the fi nest macroremains found in undisturbed deposits have suggested ages that were far from probable (e.g. Beer et al 2007, Kiage & Liu 2009. CONCLUSIONS 1.…”

“…During S16, C. anthracinus ‐type is one of the first taxa to appear in higher numbers. This taxon is known to colonize the sublittoral and profundal of stratified lakes (Heinis & Crummentuijn 1992; Hamburger et al 1995; Beer et al 2007). At the same time, the number of Characeae oogonia also increases.…”
