Vehicular Communication Management Framework: A Flexible Hybrid Connectivity Platform for CCAM Services

Abstract: In the upcoming decade and beyond, the Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) initiative will play a huge role in increasing road safety, traffic efficiency and comfort of driving in Europe. While several individual vehicular wireless communication technologies exist, there is still a lack of real flexible and modular platforms that can support the need for hybrid communication. In this paper, we propose a novel vehicular communication management framework (CAMINO), which incorporates flexible su… Show more

“…The logging of the data is being done according to the Intercor logging format [29] in order to ensure the consistency of the logged data based on a common logging format. The management of the different V2X technologies, the services running on top of them and the logging of the transmitted and received messages is handled by the in-house designed and developed vehiCulAr coMmunIcation maNagement framewOrk (CAMINO) framework [30] that is further described in Section IV-B. After the end of a test, all the locally logged data from all the participating OBUs and RSUs are collected to the central logging server (step 2 of the testing methodology).…”

“…The efforts of the authorities and the European Commission in 2009 succeeded in standardizing M/453 to all three European-level organizations (ESOs: ETSI, CEN1, and CENELEC2. The requests came based on a coherent set of standards, guidelines, and specifications to be able to implement new types of cooperative intelligent transport at the EU level [18]. As for CEN and ETSI, they officially accepted the standard, except CENELEC2 through disinterest and non-attendance at debates and development of the standard.…”

“…Current low-frequency systems have limited perimeters and sometimes delays of the order of 400-500 milliseconds for a coverage radius of about 200m. The results of the current studies are based on complete systems equipped with traffic control units and road units (RSU), and the vehicles are equipped with onboard control units that can become an integral part of the ECU component [17,18]. Most of the current results have analyzed and exposed the systems in different scenarios, which are as complex as possible, but at the same time have not simplified the method of communication.…”

“…The long-range communication protocol is Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) PC5 technology, the cellularbased communication protocol. The detailed study by [48] pointed out two applicable communication protocols for ITS are 802.11p-based, which contain ITS-G5. The 5G technology offers adaptive application-focused, increased speed, reduced latency (i.e., from 20 milliseconds to approximately one millisecond), and more service-oriented with 99.999 percent reliability.…”
