In a vehicular scenario where the penetration of cars equipped with wireless communication devices is far from 100% and application requirements tend to be challenging for a cellular network not specifically planned for it, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), carrying mobile base stations, becomes an interesting option. In this article, we consider a cellular-vehicle-to-anything (C-V2X) application and we propose the integration of an aerial and a terrestrial component of the network, to fill the potential unavailability of short-range connections among vehicles and address unpredictable traffic distribution in space and time. In particular, we envision a UAV with C-V2X equipment providing service for the extended sensing application, and we propose a UAV trajectory design accounting for the radio resource (RR) assignment. The system is tested considering a realistic scenario by varying the RRs availability and the number of active vehicles. Simulations show the results in terms of gain in throughput and percentage of served users, with respect to the case in which the UAV is not present.

60-GHz Millimeter-Wave Propagation Inside Bus: Measurement, Modeling, Simulation, and Performance Analysis

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmission over the unlicensed 60-GHz spectrum is a potential solution to realize high-speed internet access, even inside mass transit vehicles. The solution involves communication between users and a mmWave-band on-board unit that aggregates/disseminates data streams from/to commuters and maintains the connection with the nearest terrestrial network infrastructure node. In this paper, we provide a measurement-based channel model for the 60-GHz mmWave propagation inside a typical inter-city bus. The model characterizes power delay profile (PDP) of the wireless intra-vehicular channel, and it is derived from about 1000 data sets measured within the bus. The proposed analytical model is further translated into a simple simulation algorithm that generates in-vehicle channel PDPs. Different goodness-of-fit tests confirm that the simulated PDPs are in good agreement with the measured data. Finally, a tapped-delay-line (TDL) channel model is formulated from the proposed PDP model, and the TDL model is used to study the bit error rate (BER) performance of the mmWave link inside bus under varying data rates and link lengths.INDEX TERMS Intra-vehicular communication, 60 GHz channel sounding, power delay profile, tapped delay line, bit error rate.

In the recent years, we are witnessing a growing interest into the design of smart vehicles and smart roads for Intelligent transportation systems. Vehicles as part of the Internet of Things should provide to the driver and passenger with a variety of services using efficient gateway discovery mechanism while maintaining a certain level of security and authentication to avoid potential malicious attacks. In this paper, we propose a secure hybrid adaptive gateway discovery and communication protocol for smart vehicular networks, which we refer to as SEGAL. Our proposed SEGAL protocol is based upon building a secure clustered vehicular network, and permits the exchange of gateway discovery messages through authenticated clusterheads and cluster members. We shall present the design of our protocol, and describe how it can overcome the possible malicious attacks that might harm the network. Then, we report its efficiency and scalability using an extensive set of simulation experiments using Ns‐2 simulator. Our results indicate that the proposed SEGAL protocol is scalable while achieving high success rate, low response time and dropping rate. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
