Vendettas

Abstract: Vendettas occur in many real-world settings where rivals compete for a prize, e.g., winning a competitive promotion or retaining a job, by engaging in aggressive, retaliatory behavior. We present a benchmark experiment where two players have an initial probability of winning a prize. Retaliatory vendettas occur and lead subjects to the worst possible outcomes in 2/3 of cases, counter to self-interest predictions, with large inefficiencies even in the absence of any immediate gain from aggression. Negative emot… Show more

“…Recently, several laboratory experiments have examined different conflict resolution mechanisms including sidepayments Sheremeta, 2013, 2014) and random devices . Other studies investigate the importance of retaliation (Lacomba et al, 2014), emotions (Bolle et al, 2014), and the length of the conflict (McBride and Skaperdas, 2014), on the likelihood of conflict avoidance.…”

“…According to Fisher (2000) conflicts would have a tendency to escalate in the case of repeated situations. The role played by retaliation in the occurrence of conflicts has also been investigated in several previous experimental studies (Bolle et al 2014;Zizzo, 2003). For instance, Bolle et al (2014) studied the determinants of vendettas.…”

For instance, Bolle et al (2014) studied the determinants of vendettas. The authors found that vendettas frequently occurred even when initial endowment were equal and despite the fact that vendettas were pointless.…”
