“…GPx offers protection to the cellular and subcellular membranes from the peroxidative damage by eliminating hydrogen peroxide by utilizing reduced glutathione and H 2 O 2 as substrates to yield H 2 O and oxidized glutathione and its declined activity may be due to the reduced availability of GSH (Li et al, 2012). In consistency with the previous reports, L-NAME induced hypertensive rats showed significantly depleted levels of antioxidant enzymes in tissues (Kumar et al, 2011;Saravanakumar and Raja, 2011). Administration of D-carvone, improved the activities of enzymatic antioxidants in L-NAME induced hypertensive rats.…”

“…Previous work from our laboratory (Evangelou et al, 1998) showed that vanillylmandelic acid inhibits platelet aggregation ex vivo through platelet lipoxygenase inhibition. This property has been attributed to the vanillyl group (4-hydroxy 3-methoxy phenolic ring), based on similar actions of compounds including this structure (Kumar et al, 2011;Nakmareong et al, 2011;Saravanakumar and Raja, 2011;Srivastava et al, 1995). The results derived from the present study extend the effects of the 3-methoxy phenolic ring on the cardiovascular system; thetrimetazidine, containing a tri-methylated ring appears less potent in comparison with vanillylmandelic acid or homovanillic acid.…”
