Verges as Fragments of Loess Grasslands in the Carpathian Basin and Their Festuca Species

Abstract: Loess vegetations of the Carpathian Basin have been ploughed for a thousand years. Therefore, loess steppes of verges of the Transdanubia have nearly disappeared. Therefore, in Hungary, it is also important to find out the composition of loess vegetation. The aims of our study were to date the age of the sample verges and explore types of verges. Is there a correlation between the types, location, expanse and vegetation types of the verges? Which of the coenologically important species of the genus Festuca occ… Show more

“…This result refers to natural annual species and pioneer species. The present study also confirms the results that during succession, all of these species with short life stages are replaced over time by perennials [49] due to their better competitive ability [45,47].…”

“…On the contrary, in our study target species were already documented at the beginning of the restoration period [9]. The results of the study by Rehounková and Prach [16] are similar to the results of other studies on grasslands [9,22,47]. These studies suggest that the appearance of open sandy grassland species in the sandy grassland is probably a propagule-limited process, which can be influenced by the species composition of adjacent grasslands.…”

“…These patches of loess remnants are considered as hot spots for vegetation (Deák et al, 2016b(Deák et al, , 2022Dembicz et al, 2018Dembicz et al, , 2020. In addition, verges alongsideagricultural areas and roads, where the vegetation has been reduced, are also very important as relics of the former vegetation (Csathó, 2008(Csathó, , 2011Szentes et al, 2022;Bajor et al, 2016).…”

“…A legeltetés fenntartása a társulások megőrzése miatt is indokolt. A terület biomassza mennyiségének biztosítása érdekében is jelentős a legeltetés (Fűrész et al, 2022). A hazai löszgyepek megőrzése, még fragmentumok formájában is kiemelkedő szerepű (Deák et al, 2021a, b;Csathó, 2011;Csontos et al, 2022;Barczi et al, 2004;Valkó et al, 2018).…”
