Verification of Interlocking Systems Using Statistical Model Checking

Abstract: Abstract-1 In the railway domain, an interlocking is the system ensuring safe train traffic inside a station by controlling its active elements such as the signals or points. Modern interlockings are configured using particular data, called application data, reflecting the track layout and defining the actions that the interlocking can take. The safety of the train traffic relies thereby on application data correctness, errors inside them can cause safety issues such as derailments or collisions. Given the hig… Show more

“…Statistical & probabilistic model checking: Real-time statistical/probabilistic model checking has been used to verify systems in various domains such as communication protocols [21], railway systems [6] and decisional robotics [29]. At the functional layer of robotic systems, statistical and probabilistic model checkers are seldom used.…”

“…The toolbox support-engine used for the hypothesis testing relies on the results coming from the statistics like sequential hypothesis testing or Monte Carlo simulation. Let us illustrate how one of the algorithms e.g the Monte Carlo algorithm will estimate the probability γ of satisfying property φ [16]. First the user will specify the number of random simulations ρ 1 , ρ 2 ...ρ N −1 , ρ N , and then probability γ will be estimated as:…”

“…Statistical model checking has also been used to verify the reliability of railway interlocking systems [19] and Uppaal has been used to verify railway timetables [34]. Uppaal Stratego has been applied to a few other case studies belonging to the transport domain, such as traffic light controllers [3], cruise control [38], and railway scheduling [37].…”
