Viability of MS2 and Phi6 Bacteriophages on Carpet and Dust

Abstract: Respiratory viral illnesses are commonly spread in the indoor environment through multiple transmission routes, including droplets, aerosols, and direct/indirect contact. Indoors, resuspension of dust from flooring is a major source of human exposure. However, it is critical to determine viral persistence on dust and flooring to better characterize human exposure. The goal of this work is to determine viral viability on two carpet types (cut and looped) and house dust over time and after four different cleanin… Show more

“…Introduction Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome related Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), can be inactivated by exposure to heat, 1-5 like several other viruses. 1,6,7 Heat sensitivity of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 can be leveraged to sanitize common touchpoints of public and private vehicles. This sanitization can be done as part of routine cleaning or as a sanitization protocol following exposure of the vehicle to a person shedding viral particles.…”
