Virality as a paradigm of digital communication. Review of the concept and update of the theoretical framework

Abstract: Viral communication has experienced noticeable changes since its first definition by Rushkoff in 1994. “…Virality is defined as the probability of an entity-such as a message-being passed along (Hansen et al 2011). While virality is an anthropological fixture in human society, only recently, with the advent of the interactive web, has it became a major research focus in social sciences (Arjona-Martín et al 2020). A growing body of literature has highlighted the perverse effects of viralisation mechanisms, which allow extremism, disinformation and hate speech to leverage some of the inbuilt features of the internet's mass-sharing infrastructures: the lack of gatekeeping, the algorithmic amplification of highly engaging content regardless of its quality, the creation of echo chambers, etc.…”

“…Lastly, the 'user-managed databases' require the users to invite their networks to share the viral message after creating and managing their own networks through a database generated with the help of an online service. According to Arjona-Martín et al(2020), 'pass it on' type of viral messages are the most basic and salient type of viral messages.…”

“…The paradigm shift in communication due to digitalisation has changed human interactions over recent decades (Arjona-Martín;Méndiz-Noguero;Victoria-Mas, 2020), and these relationships are taking place in a highly complex and continuously evolving scenario (Kim;Kang;Lee, 2021). Moreover, 'cyberculture' and its influence on social practices are predominant in the current context (Durmus, 2021;Lévy, 2007;Turner, 2021).…”
