Virological Investigations of Herpesvirus saimiri-lnSected Owl Monkeys

Abstract: Examination of owl monkeys with Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) infections failed to reveal site of active viral replication. Virus was readily rescued by cocultivation from many tissues; however, infectious virus or viral antigens were not detected in these same tissues. Type-C RNA viruses were not detected using RNA-dependent DNA polymerase or group-specific radioimmunoassay techniques. Nucleic acid base analogs failed to induce type-C viruses. These data lend further support to the notion that HVS is the etiologi… Show more

“…saimiri assays were performed, in quadruplicate, in 16-mm-well culture plates (Linbro Chemical Co., Waltham, Mass.) as described (11). Herpes simplex virus, type 1 (obtained from J. Docherty, Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pa.), was assayed in 35-mm-well culture plates (Linbro) using overlay media containing 1% human serum.…”

“…The first hypothesis may be supported by the fact that all attempts to isolate cell-free virus from serum and oral swabs of tumordeveloping owl monkeys and marmosets remained unsuccessful Neubauer et al, 1974c). Herpesvirus saimiriinfected marmosets and owl monkeys do not excrete appreciable amounts of infectious virus.…”

“…Although the oncogenicity of these viruses has not been demonstrated, the inoculation of both of them into day-old guinea pigs resulted in the enlargement of spleen and lymph nodes (18). In HVS studies, the examination of viral inocula as well as tumor and other tissues from owl monkeys and marmosets with lymphomas has not revealed evidence for the presence of type C viruses (8,26,27). RNAdependent DNA (12,14).…”
