Virtual Endoscopy in Research and Clinical Practice

Abstract: Virtual endoscopy is among the most active topics in virtual medicine and medical imaging. It focuses on the virtual representation of minimally invasive procedures for training, planning and diagnosis without an actual invasive intervention. In the past few years, virtual endoscopy modes have been transferred from research systems in virtually every commercial medical imaging software, but with varying quality and flexibility. This report covers concepts used in current systems in research and products, and h… Show more

“…However, the direct application of surface rendering algorithms (i.e., Marching Cubes) to the segmented vasculatures may suffer from the typical diamond shaped artifacts [see Fig. 16 (right)] caused by the trilinear interpolation [42]. Therefore, the smooth and accurate reconstruction of vascular tree is very crucial for virtual angioscopy.…”

“…Various virtual angioscopy techniques can be roughly classi ed into three classes: automatic navigation, manual or free navigation and guided navigation [43]. The drawback of automatic navigation is the lack of interactivity, which means that user interaction is limited and the irrelevant regions cannot be easily skipped [42]. By manual navigation, user can completely control over all parameters of the virtual camera without any constraints.…”

“…Virtual bronchoscopy [1] CT-guided approach represents a modern solution to the difficult problem of bronchoscope positioning during medical procedure of transbronchial needle-aspiration biopsy. It makes use of real-time registration of real 2D images (coming from an endoscope) and virtual ones (obtained from virtual camera looking inside a 3D model of bronchial tree, reconstructed from CT patient data by means of segmentation).…”

“…Virtual colonoscopy is a patient-friendly technique that enables effective screening of the large intestines for colorectal polyps, which are well-known precursors of colon cancer. 1,2 The interior colon wall is extracted from the patient data set, usually CT scans, and then rendered to allow for visual inspection by a radiologist. Due to the complexity of the colon wall, a thorough examination of the entire colon is very time consuming.…”
