Virtual environments for the training of maintenance and service tasks

Abstract: This paper presents an interactive, virmal reality based training environment specifically developed to support training of maintenance procedures of complex technical equipment. The architecture of the system will briefly be described. Moreover, the paper explains the different training modes that allow for adapting the training environment to the trainee's knowledge and determine the level of interactivity. A short glimpse is given to the scenario author's work. Finally, an example scenario will be described… Show more

“…However, most systems are aimed at supporting training of maintenance tasks in which knowledge of both assembly and disassembly are part of what is acquired during the training of the tasks (Webel et al, 2013, Xia et al, 2012Peniche et al, 2011;Gutiérrez et al, 2010;Abate et al, 2009;Oliveira et al, 2007;Wang and Li, 2004;Bluemel et al, 2003;Vora et al, 2002); only a few are dedicated solely to support training of assembly tasks (Lili et al, 2009;Brough et al, 2007;Abe et al, 1996). On studying these publications further we also found an indication that formal user requirements elicitation was rarely conducted prior to the development of the systems.…”

“…Uma interessante área de treinamento é a de manutenção de equipamentos, principalmente em processos industriais, pois nesses casos os ambientes tradicionais de treinamento apresentam limitações e alto custo [19]. Tecnologias RVA podem permitir a visualização e manipulação de componentes de difícil acesso, além de oferecer um suporte nas operações de montagem e desmontagem de equipamentos, nem sempre previstas em manuais.…”

“…In the dialog mode [36], also called "discovery mode" [5], conceptual and theoretical information, normally in a textual format (including hyperlinks if necessary [21]), is presented to the apprentice, This information is related to the procedural content that will be applied later in the simulated 3D environment and/or allows the apprentice to discover/learn the shape and the spatial relationship among objects of the scene [35]. This mode promotes a learning strategy called "learn by knowing".…”
