Virtual Nursing Avatars: Nurse Roles and Evolving Concepts of Care

Abstract: Advances in computer software have provided interactive tools that perform many of the duties once in the domain of the nursing profession. Sometimes referred to as 'virtual nursing avatars,' the duties delegated to this technology include facilitating check-ins for patients and coaching patients as they make lifestyle changes. Researchers continue to develop computer applications for virtual nurse avatars. As computers and smartphones take on tasks once in the domain of humans, the roles of nurses will evolve… Show more

“…This technology has been increasingly integrated-through television and mobile devices-into patients' lives and clinical work environments. 40 Major advantages of virtual health care are its facilitation and integration into telemedicine programs such as those used in remote patient monitoring and cardiac rehabilitation. 41 Nonetheless, there are important concerns regarding the virtual nature of this technology, most of which revolve around a lack of physical contact and diminished emotional connections with the patient and a decreased ability to make complex decisions.…”

“…41 Nonetheless, there are important concerns regarding the virtual nature of this technology, most of which revolve around a lack of physical contact and diminished emotional connections with the patient and a decreased ability to make complex decisions. 40 These limitations could be addressed by continuous scrutiny and monitoring of virtual programs performed by human personnel. As with all technologies used to guide patient care, the capabilities of virtual health care assistants must be met with scrutiny and establishment of high standards as they are increasingly integrated into direct patient care.…”
