Virtual Observations: a software tool for contextual observation and assessment of user’s actions in virtual reality

Abstract: In this paper, we present 'Virtual Observation' (VO) a software tool for contextual observation and assessment of user's directly from within the virtual reality (VR) simulation framework. Unlike other recording systems, the VO system described in this paper focuses on recording and reconstructing VR user's positional, rotational and input data to recreate the same experience the user had with a VR simulation. Different from animation-based approaches, VO records user inputs and reconstructs the simulation fro… Show more

“…Especially in immersive VR, tracking the user action such as inputs can be difficult and requires special attention to ensure an accurate reconstruction (Howie and Gilardi, 2020). Beyond measuring participants performance in VR, it is often useful to measure their attitudes with surveys (Grübel et al, 2016;Tcha-Tokey et al, 2016) (Grübel et al, 2016) for subjective measures and if possible their physiological reaction (Weibel et al, 2018) to underpin the mechanism investigated in a study beyond self-report and task completion.…”

“…Only a few frameworks opt for databases (i.e. Grübel et al, 2016;Howie and Gilardi, 2020;Wang et al, 2020;Brookes et al, 2019) because they have more complex use cases in mind. Large amounts of raw data from different sources make text files unwielding and require more effective data assembly.…”

“…According to (Scavarelli et al, 2021), software development will replace hardware and memory storage, and immersive VR will become commonplace. Nonetheless, implementation will be tricky because special software is for educational application demands (Howie & Gilardi, 2021).…”

“…In order to meet the accessibility requirements of different users on the browser side [18,19], the configuration requirements of the equipment during system development shall be minimized as far as possible so as to meet most browser in the market. e system uses JSP (Java Server Pages) dynamic web page backend technology to contact the browser-side HTML web page system operation interface and server database.…”
