Virtual Reality Platforms For Education and Training in Industry

Abstract: Developing, testing and operating complex machinery and repairing it under time pressure if it breaks down are some of the new skills professionals in many occupations have to learn as quickly as possible. Actions on machinery and plants are trained in individual lessons on an immersive virtual model. Lessons can be repeated as often as desired and independent of the real machinery’s temporal and spatial constraints, without any risk to operators or the system if errors are made and even before the real system… Show more

“…Before the innovation of Oculus Rift, many of the devices in the market were not as developed and thus not as appealing to consumers (Rebenitsch & Owen, 2016;Stein, 2016). Although increasing in popularity with consumers and businesses, VR's initial high price disrupted the quick adoption for many (Blümel et al 2009;Germani et al, 2012;Xia et al, 2013;Grabowski & Jankowski, 2015;Stein, 2016 VR is a simulated 3D environment in which people become immersed (Wexelblat, 1993).…”

“…Concepts developed in these works may be applicable in our project, but at the time of writing this paper, we did not have the opportunity to investi-D r a f t Figure 2: Global ELab architecture gate more deeply. Much more recently, the Fraunhofer IFF Learning Platform [6] provides a VR to perform a very realistic virtual laboratory training. The platform features its own authoring system to create learning scenarios without being VR expert but rather learning content expert.…”

“…In order to explore the expectations of the students, their way of life, their uses of Internet and their computer equipment, an assessment of their needs was conducted. Following the results obtained and according to many studies on the value added by three dimensional environments (3D) in e-learning [2][3][4][5][6], we have designed GE3D, a virtual campus with the SCOL technology [7].…”
