The training of a fire investigator should lay the foundations for a systematic, evidence‐based, and unbiased analysis of a fire scene. The ability of the investigators to determine the origin, cause and development of a fire is gained through education, experience based on on‐the‐job training and focused continuous professional development (CPD). Practitioners have met these requirements for several decades through formal examinations and specialized training. Additionally, several countries provide training in full‐scale (simulated) fire scenes for public and private sector fire investigators. These scenes may also be used for ongoing competency and proficiency testing. However, simulated fire scene setups are costly, limited to a single excavation event, and often short‐lived due to deterioration upon use and ease of contamination. The COVID‐19 pandemic highlighted the need, and provided the opportunity, for developing both virtual/hybrid training and competence testing, prompting the exploration of novel technologies in this area. A cross‐border multi‐agency partnership between academics, forensic practitioners, and forensic scientists explored the feasibility of leveraging digitalization techniques to support immersive virtual reality (VR). In particular, Broomé et al (2014), Firmin et al (2018, Holmgren et al (2019) and Pozharkova et al (2020) presented a practice-oriented approach to use statistically significant results in the development of the skills of students in the fire-technical profile. At the same time, in such studies, the emphasis, as a rule, is placed on the individual practice-oriented skills formation, while in our work the formation of them in a complex is considered, taking into account the specifics of the tasks facing the Russia Ministry of Emergencies higher education educational institutions cadets.…”

The article discovers the substance of the readiness for research activities of cadets of the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (EMERCOM). It considers the structure of this readiness and describes its components (motivational, cognitive, organizational and practical, evaluative and reflexive); determines criteria characteristics reflecting the three-level manifestation of the readiness for research activities of the Russian EMERCOM cadets; proposes a set of methods for assessing the level of their readiness for research activities by motivational, cognitive, organizational and practical, evaluative and reflexive criteria; describes diagnostic methods and result-measuring tools for each of the above criteria used in studying the level of readiness for research activities of cadets of the Siberian Fire Rescue Academy of Russian SFS EMERCOM; presents the results of diagnostic testing on the readiness for research activities; It was found that 59% of the cadets have a low level of readiness to organize and carry out research activities.
