Virtual rolling automation and setup calculations for six stands FEM finishing mill

Abstract: Digitalization is becoming increasingly common in the steel industry. Formerly developed models of individual phenomenon or separate sub-processes are being further developed into wider complexes where multiple models are coupled together. Virtual rolling automation, which can be used to control a finite-element rolling model, is a new element in these complexes. The automation enables to model the variations caused by the process adjustment. It must be taken in the account that neither the model nor the indus… Show more

“…The ARCPRESS module calculates the mechanical state of the roll bite. ARCPRESS is published by authors in [15] and is mainly based on the work of Alexander [16] and Chen [17] to calculate contact pressure and frictional shear stress over the contact arc between the steel strip and work roll by the angular coordinate θ. Alexander's model is a fundamental numerical solution to Karman's differential equation [18] considering slipping and sticking friction regions over the contact arc. Chen derived the Karman equation by constituting the vertical and horizontal force equilibrium equation of the infinitesimal body [17].…”

“…The model contains virtual setup calculations, rolling automation and phenomena-based models for the most crucial thermo-mechanical phenomena. By implementing setup calculations and rolling automation [17] into FEM-model of the finishing mill, the actual response of the process can be considered in the model. Virtual rolling automation contains looper control (strip tensioning), rolling speed adjustment, automatic roll gap control, cooling of work rolls as well as entry-and intercoolers of the strip.…”
