Virtual Spatial Modulation for MIMO Systems

Abstract: Abstract-Compared with the conventional amplitude phase modulation (APM), spatial modulation (SM) is a low-complexity, yet energy-efficient transmission technique, whereby transmit antenna (TA) indices are utilized to convey the information. However, the number of the required TAs grows exponentially with the number of transmitted bits, which leads to unacceptable pilot overhead for channel estimation in practical systems. To reduce the number of TAs whereas keep the data rate unchanged, virtual spatial modula… Show more

“…In order to improve the reliability of the overall OWC system, OSM has also been integrated with space time block codes (STBCs) [7]. However, it is challenging for OSM systems to achieve a high spectral efficiency, since only a single LED transmitter is activated for signal transmission at each time slot [8]. In order to enhance the spectral efficiency of OSM, generalized OSM (GOSM) schemes have been further proposed, which activate more than one LED to transmit the same constellation symbol at each time slot [9], [10].…”

“…For higher data rate in case of having unequal channel gain, SM is incorporated with SDIV. SM encodes data in the spatial domain by activating a single transmitter in a MIMO link while the rest of the transmitters remain idle [16], [17]. In [18], this technique has been combined with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for robust performance in Rician fading channels.…”

“…Index modulation (IM) is a category of relatively new MIMO techniques that fulfills these high data requirements by allowing the transmission of information using the conventional signal symbols and the indices of given resources of the communication systems [ 2 , 3 ]. These indices represent antennas [ 4 ] or a combination of antennas [ 5 ], spreading codes [ 6 ], polarities [ 7 ], sub-carriers [ 8 ], or a combination of sub-carriers with multi-mode modulation [ 9 , 10 ], rotation angles [ 11 ], and virtual parallel channels [ 12 ], among others.…”
