Virucidal properties of new multifunctional fibrous N-halamine-immobilized styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers

Abstract: Virucidal properties of N-chlorosulfonamides immobilized on fibrous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers have been studied. Corresponding materials with different functional group structures and chlorine content have been synthesized on FIBAN polymer carriers in the form of staple fibers and non-woven fabrics. The study has been conducted in general accordance with EN 14476 standard on poliovirus type-1 and adenovirus type-5. It has been found that all tested samples exhibit pronounced virucidal activity: regardl… Show more

“…depending on the purpose of the application, which will be the subject of our separate study. Te antimicrobial [9], virucidal [47], and reparative [29] properties of the polymers themselves, and their microbial impermeability [48], together with the data obtained in this study, open up broad prospects for the manufacture of multifunctional medical devices using such materials.…”

“…One of the methods for regulating the pharmacological activity of such drugs is their immobilization on various carriers, which can increase the stability of the molecule, protect it from the effects of certain factors (for example, gastric juice when administered orally), and also provide controlled release into the environment, which allows prolonging the effect. Thus, many examples of successful immobilization of antibiotics, [202,203] enzymes, [204,205] peptides, [206,207] halogen-active, [208][209][210] and peroxide [211] preparations on polymeric carriers of various nature have been described. Low toxicity, large surface area, sorption properties, and the possibility of diffusion of the intercalated anion make SDGs promising containers for various microbiocides instead of hard-to-produce polymer bases.…”

“…Materials functionalized in this way contain a significant (up to 13 %) amount of active chlorine, are extremely stable, chemically resistant, and can be repeatedly regenerated. They have been shown to have antimicrobial [52], virucidal [53], and reparative [54] activity. Also there is the possibility of using them to obtain chlorine-active solutions [55].…”
