In this study we present new carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope data of human (n=13) and animal (n=40) bone and/or dentine collagen samples, alongside accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dates of human remains (n=16). The studied material was sampled from Lithuanian sites dating from the Late Mesolithic to the pre-Roman Iron Age. For the first time, we present δ13C and δ15N data from Lithuanian freshwater fish as well as AMS 14C, δ13C, and δ15N measurements of human remains from six disturbed graves at the Donkalnis cemetery and from two pre-Roman Iron Age graves. According to the new results, human diet derived protein from the Late Mesolithic to Subneolithic (ca. 7000–2900 cal BC) was primarily based on freshwater fish. While previous macrobotanical and stable isotope studies has suggested that C4 plants, i.e., millet, became more widely used from the Late Bronze Age (1100–500 cal BC), our data suggests that millet consumption may have decreased during the pre-Roman Iron Age (500–1 cal BC) in the southeastern Baltic.

First Ams 14c Dating of Bronze and Pre-Roman Iron Age Cremated Bones From Barrows in Western Lithuania: Results and Interpretation

Whilst the practice of cremation first emerged and spread in the East Baltic region during the 2nd-1st millennium BC, non-cremation burials in both barrows and flat cemeteries continued to exist in parallel or the inhumation custom was first replaced by cremations until, at the end of the Pre-Roman Iron Age, inhumation became the dominant burial custom. Barrows were the main type of burial monument in western Lithuania through the Late Bronze Age and Pre-Roman Iron Age, even during the transition from cremation to inhumation. The emergence of cremation led to a decrease in grave goods, which, combined with variations in the structure of the mounds and stone arrangements associated with cremation burials and the placement of graves inside or outside the barrow, left the typological method alone incapable of determining the beginning and duration of the cremation custom. Therefore, the AMS 14 C method was applied for the first time to date cremated bones from barrows in western Lithuania. This article presents twelve AMS 14 C dates yielded from a range of different barrows and graves in the following barrow cemeteries: Ėgliškiai, Kurmaičiai, Kveciai, Sūdėnai, Šlikiai, and Gintarai. The data was used to determine the duration of the cremation custom practiced in these barrows, and to identify chronological variations between different types of graves found within. The results indicate that cremation was practiced from the 9th-6th century BC to the 4th-2nd century BC. Comparison of AMS 14 C data from differently arranged cremation graves suggests that collective burials in barrows, burials outside the external stone circle of the barrow, and individual barrows for a single deceased could have co-existed.

In 2020, rescue excavations due to construction of a pipeline connecting Poland and Lithuania took place at the Bronze Age sites Tarbiškės 1 and Tarbiškės 2, eastern Lithuania, both dated to 1050–900 cal BC. They revealed a rather homogeneous archaeological assemblage which fills a gap in the development of the Bronze Age culture and economy in the southeastern Baltic. Tarbiškės Ware, from a typological as well as chronological point of view, stands in an intermediate position linking Trzciniec culture pottery with Žalioji and Early Striated Wares. Macrobotanical analysis of charred plant remains revealed that Bronze Age people at Tarbiškės cultivated Panicum miliaceum, Hordeum vulgare and Triticum sp. The Tarbiškės sites demonstrate that early farmers used to settle areas at higher elevations with sandy soils, further from large bodies of water. They used flint and other stone tools widely and lacked bronze. Tarbiškės is the first and only ancient settlement discovered in Lithuania with a workshop for on-site manufacturing of polished stone axes with drilled holes.
