Visual Design Principles: An Empirical Study of Design Lore

Abstract: Many books, designers, and design educators talk about visual design principles such as balance, contrast, and alignment, but with little consistency. This study uses empirical methods to explore the lore surrounding design principles. The study took the form of two stages: a quantitative literature review to determine what design principles are mentioned most often in discourse on design, and a card sorting exercise to explore the relationships designers, design educators, and design students saw among the mo… Show more

Let us assume the student was able to identify the content appropriate for the topic but failed in Domain 1 (conceptual).…”

“…This pattern of behavior indicates that users do not trust the brand promises or their own use of the tests and will buy more than one brand to attempt to achieve a user-created empirical data set. As Childerhose and Macdonald elaborate, "[t]he assumption that consumers are rational, entrepreneurial agents who choose and use products with competence and confidence, and that the information they produce from these tests allows them to make informed decisions about their pregnancies, is problematic in light of the known behavior of women who use these tests" [2013,4]. Patterns of behavior suggest that women are not confidence in how they administer these tests, or how accurate their own experience with a specific test might be, and as a result, audience interpretation and brand promise of reliability cannot be considered to be one and the same.…”
