Visual evoked potentials standard (2004)

Abstract: This document presents the current (2004) standard\ud for the visual evoked potential (VEP). The VEP\ud is an evoked electrophysiological potential that can\ud be extracted, using signal averaging, from the electroencephalographic\ud activity recorded at the scalp. The\ud VEP can provide important diagnostic information\ud regarding the functional integrity of the visual system.\ud The current standard presents basic responses\ud elicited by three commonly used stimulus conditions\ud using a single, midline re… Show more

“…The first component (C1) would correspond to the N75 elicited by conventional, largefield pattern reversal stimulation (Odom et al, 2004(Odom et al, , 2010. As shown by many previous studies (Clark et al, 1995;Di Russo et al, 2002Kelly et al, 2008Kelly et al, , 2013bZhang and Hood, 2004) and replicated here, C1 polarity is largely dependent on stimulus position.…”

“…It can provide important diagnostic information regarding the functional integrity of the visual system (Odom et al 2004). VEPs, although performed in several studies before, have not been examined thoroughly as a differential diagnostic tool in NB and MS patients.…”

“…In most areas of physiological recording and in electroretinography, the time from stimulus onset to the peak of a deflection has been referred to as the implicit time and latency referred to the time from stimulus onset to the beginning of a response. Recent ISCEV standards have tended to replace implicit time with peak time or peak latency [1,4], because the meaning of the terms is more immediately apparent. We recognize that other terms have been used for this same concept.…”

“…This document updates the ISCEV standard for clinical VEP testing and supersedes the 2004 VEP standard [1]. The major change in the current standard compared with the previous VEP standard is that test parameters have been made more precise to achieve more consistency of results within and between test centers.…”
