Visual Function Abnormalities and Prognosis in Eyes with Age-related Geographic Atrophy of the Macula and Good Visual Acuity

Abstract: Purpose-Geographic atrophy (GA) may cause significant compromise of visual function, even when there still is good visual acuity (VA), because of parafoveal scotomas and foveal function abnormalities antedating visible atrophy. This study evaluates the visual function abnormalities at baseline and the 2-year worsening of VA and reading rate for eyes with GA compared with a group of eyes with drusen only.Methods-Seventy-four eyes with GA and VA greater than or equal to 20/50 from a prospective natural history s… Show more

“…Geographic atrophy (GA) of the RPE is a form of advanced AMD that is associated with central vision loss, 2 progresses gradually, and does not regress over time. 3 In each of these degenerative disorders, if the damaged photoreceptors can be replaced with new cells that connect with the remaining host retina, 4,5 it may be possible to restore visual function. Human fetal donor tissue transplanted to athymic nude rats can develop retinal layers in contact with a monolayer of cotransplanted RPE.…”

“…In wet AMD, there is CNV which are fragile causing leakage of blood and fluid into the subretinal space and subsequent scar formation. Other characteristics of AMD include disruption of Bruch's membrane and degeneration of RPE, both of which can contribute to decreased visual acuity (36)(37)(38). The CNV can be treated by a combination therapy of IVTA and photodynamic therapy (PDT) which acts synergistically to improve the vision and reduces the number of treatments required to maintain acuity (39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44).…”
