Visual Management of Daily Construction Site Space Use

Abstract: Space is a construction resource not to be overlooked during project scheduling, production planning, and control. When space use over time is not planned, trades may get stacked in areas of the jobsite that are labor intensive, which may hamper productivity and cause safety concerns. Augmenting traditional scheduling representations, spatiotemporal modeling in construction considers both space and time to depict ongoing construction work. This paper presents a simple space scheduling program called LoSite tha… Show more

“…Some of the developed tools are low tech, while some others use more advanced technologies. In the first category, there are the tools based on Microsoft Excel [24] provided by [25,26]. Although the use of a widespread tool like Microsoft Excel enables all construction practitioners to apply this approach, 2D spatial representation may represent a limitation and cause failures in the detection of spatial interferences.…”

“…The organization and control of construction activities taking the use of time and space into account separately have existed for many years [1][2] [3]. It becomes static or plane planning when the use of time or space is ignored.…”

“…It becomes static or plane planning when the use of time or space is ignored. Such separations are likely to cause potential time or space conflicts of construction activities, leading to various challenges such as safety, quality, delivery, and cost [3] [4]. For those reasons, the organization and control of construction activities from the perspective of the use of both time and space, namely spatiotemporal planning, has been gradually valued in recent years because it effectively integrates both of them [5][6] [7].…”
