Visualizing reacting single atoms in chemical reactions: Advancing the frontiers of materials research

Abstract: Heterogeneous gas-solid catalyst reactions occur at the atomic level, and understanding and controlling complex catalytic reactions at this level is crucial for the development of improved processes and materials. There are postulations that single atoms and very small clusters can act as primary active sites in chemical reactions. Early applications of our novel aberrationcorrected (AC) environmental (scanning) transmission electron microscope (E(S)TEM) with single-atom resolution are described. This instrume… Show more

“…In principle, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis could provide valuable interaction on charge transfer in SAC . These characterization methods, if performed in situ (EXAFS, IR) or under environment conditions (STEM) are also extremely useful to obtain insight into the nature of the catalysis with SACs ,. Figure shows an overview of the complementary characterization methods (including DFT studies) required to assess structure and composition of SAC on carbon materials.…”

“…Further understanding of the reason for increased ripening under H 2 could be obtained by observing single-atom migration. As the mechanism is observed at its fundamental level, the requirement of modelling to interpret ac hange in particles ize is removed.T his work emphasises the importance of the newly developedE STEM, [47] which can achieve singleatom resolution in situ.
