Visualizing Social Influences on Filipino American and Southeast Asian American College Choice

Abstract: This study identifies and explores social influences on the college choice process of Filipino American and Southeast Asian American high school seniors in an urban Midwestern setting. In an effort to contribute more depth to the knowledge regarding college choice among Filipino Americans and Southeast Asian Americans, this study engaged seven high school seniors in a photo elicitation study, allowing the students to tell their own stories of their pathways to college. “…The statistical evidence overwhelmingly suggests that there are no substantive differences between Asian American students who were admitted to and attended differing choice institutions. Certainly, we know that college choice is critical for college-going students (McDonough, 1997), and likewise is of vast importance for Asian American students (Poon & Byrd, 2013; Surla & Poon, 2015; Teranishi, 2010). Indeed, it is a highly complex process that determines how students’ value, rank, and decide their choice in colleges and universities (Hossler & Gallagher, 1987)—where simply relying on rankings and prestige at elite universities is a disservice (McDonough et al, 1998).…”

“…Past studies have documented key differences among the college choice processes of Asian American students by ethnicity, gender, social class, and generation (Lew, 2006; Poon & Byrd, 2013; Teranishi, 2004, 2010; Teranishi, Ceja, Antonio, Allen, & McDonough, 2004). Regarding ethnicity, Surla and Poon (2015) suggest family and social networks shape how Filipino American and Southeast Asian American students envision and define higher education. In their work, Filipino American and Southeast Asian American students perceived college choice as a collective experience and whole family transition; they place more value on the influence of family and friends throughout the college-going process than they do with school personnel.…”

“…In terms of gender, studies have found that Asian American males viewed college as an opportunity to obtain specific job goals that are important for life after college and financial stability, whereas women viewed college to be a time for self-exploration and self-discovery (Surla & Poon, 2015). In another study, Asian American women were more likely to name individuals other than themselves as important players in their college choice process, whereas men tended not to consciously recognize the ways in which others influence their college-going process (Poon & Byrd, 2013).…”

“…Current literature on Filipinx individuals in higher education has been limited to the student experience in colleges and universities in the United States (Besnard, 2003;Buenavista, 2007Buenavista, , 2010Buenavista, , 2013Buenavista, Jayakumar, & Misa-Escalante, 2009;Castillo, 2002;Leong, 1985Leong, , 1991Leong, , 1993Maramba, 2003Maramba, , 2008Ocampo, 2016;Ong & Viernes, 2012;Surla & Poon, 2015;Vea, 2013). One early study conducted in 1981 looked at Filipinx and American student perceptions of teacher effectiveness with students from Hawaii with a large Filipinx population and students attending universities in the Philippines (Bail & Mina, 1981).…”

“…For example, Surla and Poon (2015) studied Filipinx and Southeast Asian students and the impact of social influences on the choice of college through a photograph elicited interview method. This study showed the influence of family and social networks on the choices these high school students were making about college as well as the importance of the context in which these decisions were being made.…”
