Vitamin C reduces interleukin-6 plasma concentration: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

Abstract: Background: Interleukin 6 is an important biomarker for distinguishing high-risk and low-risk patients, and is a constituent of the Nutrition Risk in the Critically III (NUTRIC) Score. Studies have indicated the beneficial effects of vitamin C on lowering IL-6 levels and reducing cytokine storm. However, there is still controversy about the exact effect, appropriate route, and dose of vitamin C usage. This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the current evidence base relating to vitamin C intervention on d… Show more

“…IL-6 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine which is increased in the early stage of infection 70 . When evaluating inflammatory disorders with Nutrice IV scores more than 400 ng, interleukin 6 is the best marker 71 . Additionally, it has the potential to evaluate cytokine storms in a variety of sepsis conditions.…”

“…In addition to the modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, vitamin C also promoted the secretion of the immunosuppressive cytokine IL-10 by dendritic cells (DCs), which in turn inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines [ 44 ]. Likewise, vitamin C inhibited the NF-κB dependent production of IL-6, which is a cytokine known to promote inflammatory responses [ 45 ].…”
