Vitellogenins in the spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum – expression profile and putative hormonal regulation of vitellogenesis

Abstract: Background Knowledge about vitellogenesis in spiders is rudimentary. Therefore, the aim of study was to check the vitellogenin (Vg) presence in various tissues of the female spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum , determine when and where vitellogenesis starts and takes place, and the putative role of selected hormones in the vitellogenesis. Results Here we show two genes encoding Vg (Pt Vg 4 and Pt Vg … Show more

“…One of the most ubiquitous genes present in arthropod ovaries that is likely regulated by these zinc-finger transcription factors is vitellogenin, which is used in the process of oocyte development [66]. Our results indicate that these genes are also undergoing alternative splicing, as we find 184 transcripts of the vitellogenin gene, a pattern found in arthropods, and more specifically in other arachnids [19,[86][87][88][89]. Vitellogenesis involves the synthesis and accumulation of proteins for eggs to develop [66].…”

“…Such dependence may indicate the role of these substances in physiological processes that take place very intensively during that period. Among them, vitellogenesis is the essential process; it begins in spiders in the last nymphal stage [77] and intensifies significantly when sexual maturity is reached. Because vitellogenesis requires high energy expenditure, the high level of expression of transcripts in the midgut glands with midgut may also indicate their influence on the regulation of energy mobilization from the energy storage compounds.…”

“…Spiders also belong to JH‐dependent vitellogenesis. Recent results in spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum showed that fenoxycarb (a JH analog) could increase the transcript and protein levels of Vg (Bednarek et al ., 2019). However, many studies confirmed that JHs or JH analogs were not involved in the regulation of tick vitellogenesis because JHs or JH analog treatment had no effects on Vg synthesis or uptake in ticks (Sankhon et al ., 1999; Friesen & Kaufman, 2004; Thompson et al ., 2005).…”

“…The VgR expression was also induced by 20E in Haemaphysalis longicornis (Boldbaatar et al ., 2008). In spider P. tepidariorum , Vg expression was upregulated by 20E (Bednarek et al ., 2019). In the present study, we also investigated the effects of JHs and ecdysteroids on vitellogenesis in the spider P. pseudoannulata , and our results showed that both VgRs and Vgs were upregulated by JHs and had no changes by ecdysteroids.…”
