Volatile composition of Curcuma angustifolia Roxb. rhizome from central and southern India

Abstract: The rhizome essential oils of Curcuma angustifolia from Central and Southern India were subjected to GC/ MS analysis, which resulted in the identification of 81 and 78 constituents, accounting for more than 95 and 99% of the oil contents, respectively. The major constituents in the rhizome oil from Central India were xanthorrhizol isomer (12.7%), methyl eugenol (10.5%), palmitic acid (5.2%) and camphor (4.2%), while the rhizomes oil from Travancore (Southern India) had germacrone (12.8%), camphor (12.3%), isob… Show more

“…Fraction 6 on preparative TLC in 9.0 : 1.0 petroleum ether : diethyl ether yielded compound 4. These compounds were characterized by m.p., UV-Vis (Shimadzu 1650 UV-Vis spectrometer, Japan), IR (ABB FLTA2000 FT-IR spectrometer, USA), 1 H-, 13 C-, 13 C-DEPT NMR (JEOL GSX 500 MHz FT NMR spectrometer, Japan), MS (Finnigan MAT 8230 mass spectrometer, Germany) and specifi c rotation (Rudolph Autopol IV polarimeter, USA) measurements. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were identifi ed as germacrane-type sesquiterpenoids germacrone, curdione, neocurdione and furanogermenone, respectively.…”

“…The purity of these compounds was ascertained in a HPTLC system with a Linomat V Applicator, Scanner III and WINCATS Software (Camag, Switzerland). Their structures were elucidated by UV-Vis (Shimadzu 1650 UV-Vis spectrometer, Japan), IR (ABB FLTA2000 FT-IR spectrometer, USA), 1 H-, 13 C-, 13 C-DEPT, 2D-COSY NMR (JEOL GSX 500 MHz FT NMR spectrometer, Japan) and MS (Finnigan MAT 8230 mass spectrometer, Germany) measurements. Specifi c rotations of these compounds were also measured (Rudolph Autopol IV polarimeter, USA).…”

“…23 The rhizome oil of the specimen identified as C. angustifolia from 'Travancore' had camphor (21.3%), germacrone (12.8%), isoborneol (8.7%), curdione (8.4%), 1,8-cineole (4.8%) and borneol (4.8%) as its major constituents. The chemical composition of this 'Travancore' sample varied remarkably from the chemical profiles of C. angustifolia from central India (xanthorrhizol isomer 12.7%, methyl eugenol 10.5%, palmitic acid 5.2%, camphor 4.2%, etc.)…”
