“…The STLIP (Figure 1a) is recognized as the largest continental flood basalt province, with the peak of volcanic activity occurring at the PTB at~252 Ma over a duration of less than 1 Ma, extending over an area of up to 5 million km 2 and has been linked to the largest known mass extinction (PTB mass extinction) (Burgess & Bowring, 2015;Erwin, 1994;Ivanov et al, 2018;Kamo, Czamanske, & Krogh, 1996;Pavlov, Fluteau, Veseloveskiy, Fetisova, & Latyshev, 2011;Pavlov et al, 2015;Reichow et al, 2002;Reichow et al, 2009;Renne & Basu, 1991;Svetlitskaya & Nevolko, 2016). In addition, the nearest possible source for the PTB volcanic ashes is Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP), which comprises a bimodal mafic-silicic suite with the silicic rocks occurring at the uppermost part of the thick lava sequence (Deng et al, 2020;Xu, Chung, Shao, & He, 2010;Yan et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2019).…”
