Volume reduction of arm lymphoedema

Abstract: Most of the volume reduction in an 11-day course of compression bandaging for severe cancer-related arm lymphoedema appeared to occur in the first few days. This study therefore compared the volume loss during days 1-4 with 5-11. Fifteen consecutive courses of bandaging were studied. Arm volume was estimated on days 1, 5 and 11. The volume reduction during days 1-4 was compared with days 5-11 using the Wilcoxan Ranked Pairs Test. Seventy nine per cent of the total median volume reduction occurred during days 1… Show more

“…Lymphoedema management in the UK has fallen to nurses, carried out predominantly in day facilities. Experience gained by nurses in lymphoedema clinics has resulted in a key role for nurses in the care of patients with lymphoedema (Rose et al, 1993). Expertise is devolved to other nursing groups, incorporated into the role of breast care nurses, district nurses, oncology nurses and lymphoedema nurses within a clinic.…”

“…In MLD, specialized rhythmic pumping techniques are used to massage the affected area and enhance the lymph flow. Gentle skin massage is thought to cause superficial lymphatic contraction, thereby increasing lymph drainage [13]. Vodder originally suggested the use of range-of-motion exercises to relieve various types of chronic edema, such as sinus congestion and catarrh [14], and the use of MLD has become a common treatment for lymphedema worldwide, especially in European hospitals and clinics.…”

“…Manual compression by a trained physiotherapist [28,29] is agreeably the preferred mode but may be unsuitable in our country due to the large number of cases and relative lack of trained staff to administer the therapy.…”
