Vulnerability of maize, millet, and rice yields to growing season precipitation and socio-economic proxies in Cameroon

Abstract: In sub-Saharan Africa growing season precipitation is affected by climate change. Due to this, in Cameroon, it is uncertain how some crops are vulnerable to growing season precipitation. Here, an assessment of the vulnerability of maize, millet, and rice to growing season precipitation is carried out at a national scale and validated at four sub-national scales/sites. The data collected were historical yield, precipitation, and adaptive capacity data for the period 1961–2019 for the national scale analysis and… Show more

“…On the other hand, a handful 5% of the respondents agreed that supernatural phenomenon was one of the causes of flooding in Babessi. Recurrent floods in Babessi village of the country have increased stress on crops, resulting in complete crop failure and decreasing yields (Lambi and Kometa, 2014;Epule et al, 2021;). Poor crop yields due to heavy and consistent rainfall evolution can lead to food shortages and starvation in households.…”

“…Adaptive capacity is the system's ability to withstand, cope, or recover from exposure or shocks such as droughts/dry spells or extreme events [32]. Generally, exposure and sensitivity tend to have a direct relationship with vulnerability and an inverse relationship with an adaptive capacity [61,66]. For example, a farmer with low adaptive capacity is more likely to suffer from the effects of climate change (increased temperature), resulting in decreased crop yields.…”

“…It has several climate types with contrasting physical and biogeographic characteristics [38]. From the north to the south of the country, the climate is dry and Sudano-Sahelian type with total annual rainfall of about 500 mm (from Ngaoundéré to the far north) to a humid equatorial climate ranging from a bi-or unimodal regime for rainfall (total annual rainfall of 3000 mm) in the southwestern part of the Cameroon plateau [39]. e center is the Guinean savanna zone, while in the west the center is the high mountain zone.…”
