Abstract: Samples of traditionally smoke-dried Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacepede), Sarotherodon galilaeus (Trewavas), Heterotis niloticus (Cuvier) and Heterobranchus bidorsalis (Geoffroy) were obtained from Oja Oba Market, Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria and examined for fungal infestation. The fish samples incubated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) for 7 days showed fungal infestation. Fungi isolated and identified included Mucor sp., Aspergillus sp., Rhizopus sp. and Fusarium sp. Six fungal species … Show more

“…Additionally, isolates from the Fusarium species were found in the samples, indicating that dried fish products were contaminated with Fusarium. These findings are consistent with those published by Nyamwaka et al [15] and Fafioye et al [25], who reported Fusarium contamination of sun-dried fish in Kenya and smoke-dried fish in Nigeria, respectively.…”

“…This can lead to fungal contamination because of the unhygienic drying conditions. In recent years, several studies have reported the serious fungal load in dried seafood products, especially in dried fish [ 5 , 6 ]. The common fungal genera isolated from contaminate dried fish are Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., Rhizopus sp., and Fusarium sp.…”

“…Because of some activities, which are seen regularly such as, the building of toilets on water bodies and the discharge of untreated and improperly treated sewage into water bodies, high levels of temperature [11,12] and high concentrations of heavy metals [13] in water bodies, there is therefore need to check if there are isolates of E. coli from water bodies in Rivers State that have developed mutations.…”
