Warming under seminatural outdoor conditions in the larval stage negatively affects insect flight performance

Abstract: Laboratory studies indicate global warming may cause changes in locomotor performance directly relevant for fitness and dispersal. Yet, this remains to be tested under seminatural settings, and the connection with warming-induced alterations in the underlying traits has been rarely studied. In an outdoor mesocosm experiment with the damselfly , 4°C warming in the larval stage decreased the flight muscle mass, which correlated with a lower flight endurance. Warming did not affect body mass, size or wing morphol… Show more

“…Whether flight ability was also correlated with monarch body size was not discussed in the paper. Additionally, a 4 C increase in rearing temperature resulted in reduced flight muscle mass and flight endurance in the damselfly Ishnura elegans (Tüzün et al, 2018).…”

“…Additionally, wing area of fore‐ and hind‐wings was measured using photographs of live individuals in dorsal view with the software ImageJ (Schneider et al., 2012). Then, wing loading was calculated as the ratio of the body mass divided by the total wing area (Tüzün et al., 2018).…”

“…The costly nature of manipulating water temperature in semi-natural conditions and challenge of controlling treatments that follow the natural fluctuations of the ambient, environmental temperature are reasons for the rarity of these studies. These manipulations of thermal regimes are more achievable in smaller, closed mesocosm systems mimicking pond systems [80][81][82][83][84]. By contrast, achieving these in open stream mesocosm systems (e.g.…”
