Waste heat potentials in the drying section of the paper machine in Umka Cardboard Mill

Abstract: Paper production is one of the most energy intensive industrial processes. The use of waste heat is very important for energy efficiency improvement in paper industry. This paper deals with methods for calculation of potentials of waste heat generated in paper/board production process. For that purpose, the material and heat balance of the cardboard machine at Umka Cardboard Mill has been determined. Field measurements were conducted in order to define the unknown values of process parameters used for ca… Show more

“…IR thermography is also used in civil engineering and architecture [22,23], electric power industry [24], automotive industry [25], medicine [26], manufacturing industry [27], environment protection, and protection of historic heritage [21,28,29], while it is also increasingly used for fluid leak detection [30,31]. IR thermography is also used in agriculture [21] and different industrial processes [32].…”

“…The pulp and paper industry with about 6% of the total worldwide industrial energy use is the fourth main industrial energy consumer in the world and the drying section is the largest energy consumer in a paper mill [1,2]. Nowadays, most paper mills have conventional multi-cylinder drying sections with closed hoods [2].…”

“…This is less than 1 % of the total water contained in the original stock but removing this amount of water is considerably more expensive than any other section of the paper machine. Therefore the dryer section uses more than 65 % of the total needed energy [4] and it is frequently responsible for more than 80 % of the total steam usage in papermaking process [2]. The comparative costs of dewatering for dryer section is 78 % of total dewatering cost, compared to 10 % in the forming section, and 12 % in the press section [3].…”
