“…Contrary to this, the treatment of wastewater through constructed wetlands offers an ecologically sustainable, cost-effective, and natural system of wastewater treatment. Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands have been used primarily for the treatment of sewage wastewater (Zidan et al 2015) and are more efficient than the surface flow wetlands. Constructed wetland has evolved through the ages and its performance has been improved from time to time by conducting experiments.…”

“…It was observed that during the setup stage the porosity of coarse gravel, rubber, and plastic media was reduced by 19%, 12%, and 9%, respectively, compared to gravel and rubber media. Further, plastic media gave better performance because plastic media contain a biological enzyme promotor formula which helps in enhancing the bacteria growth (Shiwei et al 2019;Zidan et al 2015;Khateeb et al 2019). Pucher and Langergraber (2019) carried out the study at BOKU University, Vienna, about the various design parameters that affect the efficiency of VFCW by using hydrological modelling software (HYDRUS) wetland module for three VFCW with different substrate sizes (0.06-4 mm, 1-4 mm, and 4-8 mm), different organic loading, and different temperature.…”
