Wood chips from furniture-manufacturing byproducts, which do not include adhesive or paint in the waste wood, were used for the flouring process and chemical modification of wood flour (WF). After chemical modification, the WF was mixed with polypropylene through extrusion compounding and injection-molding to prepare wood-plastic composite (WPC) injection-molded specimens for the American Society for Testing and Materials. Static contact angle measurements and stereomicroscope observations were performed. In this study, it was confirmed that the impact strength was improved by up to 55.8% and the tensile strength by up to 33.8%. The flexural modulus decreased marginally. As a result of WF chemical modification, the measured contact angle of WPC increased, which means that the wettability of the WPC specimen surface decreased. In addition, it was observed through stereomicroscopy that the whitening of the surface of the WPC specimen improved.

Stone board for the rock bed was needed to reduce weight using thin thickness and reinforced materials. In this work, stone/wood board for rock bed was studied. Stone and wood were attached to reduce total weight of stone for rock bed. For reinforcing wood heat treatment method was used to change surface and mechanical properties. Mechanical strength of heat treated wood increased more than neat condition. The optimum heat treatment condition was set on 100°C under tensile, flexural loads whereas surface energy was also obtained by contact angle measurement. Optimum adhesive condition was to get the maximum adhesion between stone and wood. Lap shear test was performed for stone/wood board with different adhesives such as amine type epoxy, polyurethane, chloro-rubber and vinyl chloride acetate type. Fracture surface of lap shear test was shown at wood fracture part on stone using amine type epoxy adhesive. It was found that for high adhesion between stone and wood the optimum adhesive was epoxy type for the rock bed.

The importance of NFC (Natural Fiber Composite) as construction materials is widely accepted all over the world. But it seems that NFC manufacturers have complicated information about the effect of ingredients to their products. Hence systematic study for optimum composition of NFC is needed. This study is aimed to elucidate the effect of ingredients to the mechanical properties of NFC. We devised design of experiments to draw a firm conclusion. The experiments were conducted with polymer processing machines which are widely accepted in polymer processing industries. The result of ANOVA analysis showed that the most important ingredient of NFC is wood flour. And as the length of wood flour increases, the mechanical properties are enhanced. Contrary to wood flour, base resin has little effect to the mechanical properties of NFC. The effect of coupling agent to flexural modulus is not ignorable, but the effect to flexural strength is different from that of flexural modulus.
