Water and sediment quality assessment in the Colastiné-Corralito stream system (Santa Fe, Argentina): impact of industry and agriculture on aquatic ecosystems

Abstract: The present study focuses on the evaluation of metal (chromium, copper, and lead), arsenic, and pesticide (atrazine and endosulfan) contamination in freshwater streams of one of the most important agricultural and industrial areas of central-eastern Argentina, which has not been reported earlier. The environmental fate of inorganic microcontaminants and pesticides was assessed. Samples were collected monthly for a year. Pesticide concentrations were measured in water; metal and arsenic concentrations were meas… Show more

“…As regards of pesticides, we found different chemical families in almost all sites. Pesticides type and concentrations were similar to those reported for other Pampean streams (De Gerónimo et al, 2014; Etchegoyen et al, 2017; Frau et al, 2021; Regaldo et al, 2018). However, neither the number of pesticides nor their concentrations were related to the stream order.…”

“…This may be explained by the fact that headwater streams are directly fed by run‐off from cultivated fields, where high doses of fertilizers are applied every planting time (Etchegoyen et al, 2017; Gutierrez, Simões, et al, 2020). In particular, SRP values of headwaters were higher than those of lowland streams (5–10) and also higher than values of other streams in the Pampas region (Frau et al, 2021; Mugni et al, 2013; Regaldo et al, 2018). These high concentrations may be associated to different factors such as the high fertilization in the adjacent fields during the sampling period and the sporadic presence of cattle in the surrounding areas (personal observation).…”
