Water Bodies an Urban Microclimate: A Review

Abstract: In urban areas, water bodies have a positive effect upon microclimate of the surroundings with the relative cooling impact it has on evaporative procedure. Hence, evaporative cooling might be one of the pretty efficient methods of passive cooling for urban spaces and buildings. Differences in temperature between the urban space and the non-urban space which surrounds, is dubbed UHI (Urban Heat Island) effect. Water bodies have also been proven to be influential methods of decreasing urban temperatures. A water… Show more

“…The rapid transport facilities and frequent visits to infested areas have been confirmed in previous studies [22,47]. Hydrology or physical existing water channels like rivers, streams and canals play an important role in ambient temperature and humidity profile of a locale [48]. Both study areas consist of many rivers, canals and streams of different lengths and sizes running through the heart of urban areas.…”

“…Apart from the natural water bodies inside the urban areas (i.e., rivers, lakes, etc.) [173,174], urban evaporative methods comprise of various systems such as pools, ponds, sprinklers and fountains [175,176] while the level of their cooling potential depends on several parameters involving the shape of the water body and the characteristics of the surrounding area [177] and also the local climatic conditions, including relative humidity, wind speed, air temperature and solar radiation intensity [178].…”

“…Together with an increase in vehicle numbers, this results in degraded air quality [11]. Additionally, impervious surfaces such as roads, contribute to the "heat island effect" where urban areas may be as much as 10°C hotter than surrounding rural areas [12]. Such damage is compounded by climate change, which is predicted to increase surface temperatures by 2-4°C by 2100 [13].…”
