Water jet guided laser microdrilling of aerospace alloys: Correlation of material properties to process time and quality

Abstract: The hot section parts in a gas turbine are subject to high working temperatures and mechanical forces. In order to endure the harsh conditions, these parts are generally made of nickel-based superalloys. Furthermore, microholes are drilled on them to help with cooling by allowing the air to pass through. These holes increase the allowable working temperature and service life of the parts as well. Water Jet Guided Laser is a technology that can be conveniently used for microdrilling operations on aerospace jet … Show more

“…Therefore, water-assisted laser machining can avoid excessive oxidation, thermal stress, HAZ, and other damage during machining. Water-assisted laser machining methods mainly include underwater laser machining [ 12 ], waterjet-guided laser machining [ 13 ], and waterjet-assisted laser machining [ 14 ]. Underwater laser machining is the simplest and most commonly used method of water-assisted laser machining.…”

“…WJGL processing technology has become an effective tool for processing high-precision devices in microelectronics and medicine [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. In recent years, WJGL processing technology has gradually started to be applied in the field of metal materials, especially in high-temperature-resistant aerospace alloys, where water-jet guided laser cutting technology has its unique processing advantages and application prospects [ 18 , 19 , 20 ]. Traditional laser cutting will cause thermal damage to the metal surface and produce a white layer.…”
