Water quality and physical hydrogeology of the Amarapura township, Mandalay, Myanmar

Abstract: Mandalay is a major city in central Myanmar with a high urban population and which lacks a central wastewater management system, a solid waste disposal process, and access to treated drinking water. The purpose of this study is to investigate the groundwater quality of local dug wells and tube wells, determine quantitative data on characteristics of the Amarapura Aquifer, and compare seasonal variations in groundwater flow and quality. Water samples were collected during the dry and wet seasons, then analyzed … Show more

“…Based on past experiences, local groups are not confident these risks will be taken into consideration in the planning and delivery phases (Mann, 2017). Previous river dredging and construction along the river has increased erosion as well as narrowed the river (Grzybowski, Lenczewski, & Oo, 2019;Pink, 2016).…”

“…The city has well-planned public drainage systems, and conduct regular maintenance. Sludge is collected using vacuum trucks, and effluent monitoring is carried out monthly to comply with NEQEG (Zin and Soe, 2010;Grzybowski et al, 2019). Approximately 94% of households use onsite system, with septic tank and pit latrines.…”

“…Charge balance error (CBE) was used to determine the level of error in the data. The error ranged between -10 and 10%, indicating an excess amount of cations which is attributed to dilution and to some constituents that precipitated during groundwater movement (Fritz 1994;Grzybowski et al 2019). Suitability of the samples for drinking and domestic use was based on WHO (2011) guidelines.…”
